A wood pellet stove is like a traditional wood burner in that it provides fast, cosy, reliable heat to the room. They have the advantage that they are a lot less effort to run, they light and manage themselves, can be remote controlled, are more efficient and produce far less particulate emissions.
A on-board fuel hopper is kept topped up by you, and the pellet stove feeds itself from this supply. An ignition element lights the stove, and each one has a controller and sensors which allow them to burn efficiently at all time.
Pellet stoves are ideal for people who do not have the time to maintain and run a wood stove, who want something that can come on automatically so that they come in to a warm room.
Wood pellet stoves automatically modulate their output very well and so whilst it is important to size it according to the heat demand of your room/house, they can be more forgiving when slightly oversized than a manual wood stove would be.
Installation is usually very easy, very similar to the installation of a wood stove in fact. Existing chimneys can usually be lined and reused. A power supply will be needed of course, and there are a few settings which the installer will set at commissioning.
As a homeowner you would generally give your pellet stove a clean inside the burning chamber once a week, hoover out the hopper every so often to keep it dust-free, and then your installer would provide a yearly service for a deeper clean and check-over.
