Wood Heating

You can heat your whole house with wood by using some type of wood boiler. These take the form of boiler stoves which are installed inside your house, or utility boilers which are installed in a separate room or outbuilding. Some utility wood boilers may have high outputs and large fuel hoppers so that you have to light them less often, with the excess heat stored in a thermal store for when it's needed.     

Heating with wood is suited to anyone with a good supply of wood - for instance those that own woodland, or extensive hedges. Wood boilers supply high temperature heating and so swapping from an oil boiler usually doesn't require the changes to the wider heating system that swapping to a heat pump might. 

As the homeowner you have to manually load the wood boiler, and may need to adjust the controls as it burns to keep it running as it should - so you do need to be willing and able to do these tasks, in fact many people who run wood boilers enjoy this aspect of them. You also need somewhere to process, season, and store your wood, and if you are processing it yourself this also takes time and is physically demanding. Again many people who manage their own firewood enjoy this aspect, they say firewood warms you three times; when you cut it, when you chop it, and when you use it.
