adia heat pump controller

Adia, the intelligent heat pump controller with automatic radiator balancing

Adia is an intelligent heat pump controller that acts as an autopilot for your heating system. It automatically optimises heat pump operation, balances radiators, learns the heating requirements of individual rooms and helps reduce running costs.

By combining room sensors, automated radiator valves and intelligent heat pump control, Adia can improve comfort and efficiency without requiring extensive changes to existing radiators and pipework.

For installers, it simplifies commissioning, radiator balancing and heat pump optimisation. For homeowners, it provides individual room temperature control, more consistent comfort and the ability to take advantage of cheaper electricity tariffs.

Adia can also be used with eligible heat pump installations funded through the Boiler Upgrade Scheme.

How does the Adia heat pump controller work?

Conventional heating controls typically switch the heating on and off based on the temperature in one part of the house. Even when weather compensation is used, the heat pump may have little information about what is actually happening in individual rooms.

Adia takes a different approach.

Temperature sensors and automated radiator valves in each room continually monitor how much heat is needed and adjust how much heat each radiator delivers.

As the system operates, Adia learns the heating characteristics and heat requirements of individual rooms. It uses this information to automatically balance the heating system and optimise the heat pump's operating temperature.

Rather than relying on manually configured radiator settings and fixed heating curves, Adia continually adjusts the system to match the home's requirements.

The result is a heating system that can deliver more consistent comfort, improved efficiency and lower running costs, with considerably less manual intervention.

Benefits for heat pump installers

Faster installation and simpler commissioning

Adia can significantly reduce the time required to commission and optimise a heat pump heating system.

Traditional commissioning involves calculating room heat losses, setting radiator flow rates, configuring heating curves and subsequently adjusting the system to improve performance.

Adia automates much of this process.

Its room sensors and radiator controllers allow it to learn the heating requirements of individual rooms and automatically balance the system as it operates.

This reduces the need for manual radiator balancing and repeated adjustments to weather compensation settings.

Adia can also make it easier to retain existing radiators and pipework, potentially reducing installation time, disruption and unnecessary replacement work.

Automatic radiator balancing and room-by-room heat demand

One of Adia's most important features is its ability to continuously balance heat distribution throughout the property.

Each radiator is fitted with an automated controller, while room sensors monitor actual temperatures.

Adia uses this information to determine how much heat individual rooms require and adjusts radiator operation accordingly.

Because it knows how much heat is needed across the whole property, it can also optimise the heat pump's operation to match the combined demand.

This goes beyond conventional thermostatic radiator valves or one-off manual balancing, as the system continually adapts to changing conditions.

Identify where radiator upgrades are actually needed

Adia can help identify individual rooms where the existing radiators cannot deliver sufficient heat at efficient operating temperatures.

Rather than replacing radiators unnecessarily, installers can focus improvements on the rooms where additional heat output would make a meaningful difference.

This can reduce installation costs and disruption while helping the heat pump operate more efficiently.

Fewer callbacks and ongoing optimisation

Adia continues learning and optimising after installation.

This reduces reliance on homeowners or installers manually adjusting heating curves and balancing settings.

By automatically responding to changing room temperatures and heating requirements, it can help address comfort and performance issues that might otherwise lead to repeat visits.

Benefits for homeowners

Lower heat pump running costs

Heat pumps generally operate most efficiently when supplying heating water at the lowest practical temperature.

Adia automatically optimises heat pump operation based on the heating requirements of individual rooms, helping avoid unnecessarily high flow temperatures.

Because it continually monitors how much heat is required throughout the home, it can adjust operation as conditions change.

Adia also allows homeowners to take advantage of time-of-use electricity tariffs, making greater use of periods when electricity is cheaper.

The savings achieved will depend on the existing heating system, its initial performance, the property and the electricity tariff.

More consistent comfort in every room

Rather than controlling the entire house from a single thermostat, Adia monitors and manages individual room temperatures.

You can choose different temperatures for different rooms, and Adia automatically adjusts the radiator controls to help maintain them.

This is particularly useful in homes where some rooms have traditionally been too warm while others struggle to reach their target temperature.

By continually balancing heat distribution and optimising heat pump operation, Adia can deliver more consistent comfort throughout the property.

Simple heating controls through the Adia app

The Adia app makes controlling your heating straightforward.

You can set your preferred temperatures for individual rooms and let Adia manage the heating system automatically.

Instead of needing to understand weather compensation curves, radiator balancing or complex heat pump settings, homeowners can simply decide how warm they want each room to be.

Adia then works in the background to deliver those temperatures as efficiently as possible.

Our experience: Adia heat pump controller trial in Devon

At Firepower, we have tested Adia over a year and a half ago on a real heat pump installation in Totnes, Devon.

The existing installation was performing poorly to averagely, so we installed independent monitoring equipment beforehand to establish how it was operating and measure the effect of introducing Adia.

The results were impressive.

Installation was straightforward and took approximately one day. We removed several unnecessary components, installed the Adia controller, fitted room sensors and automated radiator valves, and connected the system to the app.

The homeowner then selected their preferred room temperatures.

We returned briefly the following day to make some adjustments and connect additional electricity monitoring equipment.

From there, Adia began learning the home's heating requirements and automatically optimising the system.

The improvements included:

  • More consistent and comfortable room temperatures.
  • A substantial improvement in heat pump performance, from poor to good.
  • Automatically optimised heating temperature curves.
  • Identification of a targeted radiator upgrade, with only one radiator needing replacement.
  • Straightforward room-by-room temperature control through the app.
  • The homeowner reporting that their heating running costs had approximately halved.

The reduction in running costs was reported by the homeowner and relates to this particular installation. It should not be taken as a prediction of savings for other properties.

For us, the trial demonstrated the potential for intelligent heating controls to improve an existing heat pump installation without extensive modifications to the heating system.

Heat pump and heating system compatibility

Adia is primarily designed for single-zone, radiator-based wet heating systems.

It is particularly relevant to properties where existing radiators are being retained during a heat pump installation, or where an existing heat pump system would benefit from improved balancing and optimisation.

Support for more complex configurations, including multiple heating zones and underfloor heating, is being developed but is not currently available.

Compatibility with the specific heat pump and heating system should be confirmed before ordering.

Adia and the Boiler Upgrade Scheme

Using an intelligent controller such as Adia does not, in itself, prevent an otherwise eligible heat pump installation from qualifying for the Boiler Upgrade Scheme.

Adia can therefore form part of a grant-funded heat pump installation, provided the overall installation meets the applicable scheme requirements.

Find out more about Adia

At Firepower, we believe intelligent optimisation and effective heat distribution are essential to achieving consistently good heat pump performance.

Adia offers an interesting approach by combining automatic heat pump optimisation with room-by-room monitoring and radiator balancing.

For installers, it can simplify commissioning and reduce unnecessary system modifications. For homeowners, it can improve comfort, simplify heating controls and help reduce running costs.
